Design Story

The composition is strictly centered: a tall keyhole silhouette cut into a field of damask scrollwork, framed by a gold rule border with rosette corner medallions. Inside the keyhole sits the scene — a moonlit manor with lit windows, bats crossing a pale full moon, iron gates and two small lantern flames on a cobbled path. Everything outside that aperture stays tonal and low-contrast, so the eye drops straight into the opening. Typography anchors the lower third: BEYOND THE KEYHOLE in gilded serif, MANOR AFTER DARK in a quiet oxblood line beneath. Gold is used sparingly, as trim rather than decoration.

Entryway & Styling

On a rectangular doormat the format works perfectly. The border treatment mirrors the mat's own edge, the keyhole motif scales up to read clearly from standing height, and the artwork runs corner to corner with no wasted negative space.
