The composition is strictly ordered: a tall central arch holds an ornate gold key, framed by gilded scrollwork and set against deep charcoal. Flanking panels behave like a curiosity cabinet — a moth, a lit candle among violet leaves, a wax pentacle seal on one side; a skull, an apothecary bottle, an hourglass and a keyhole medallion on the other. A vertical strip of moon phases divides them. Amethyst purples and antique brass glow against near-black, and the engraved lettering reads THE BLACK RELIQUARY, CABINET OF NIGHT. It is symmetry doing the heavy lifting, quiet rather than loud.
